Heavy rainfall, spring tide may cause coastal flooding

Weather forecasters Saturday night warned that there could be flooding in some coastal areas due to heavy rainfall coupled with the Spring Tide.

“Flash Flood warning is in effect for flood prone areas within Regions 1 to 4,” according to a weather bulletin issued through the Ministry of Agriculture.

Forecasters said a lot of the rain is expected to in southern Region 6 as well as Regions 8,9 and 10. “Coastal regions will also be affected but should have less rainfall than the hinterland,” said the advisory.

Following is the full text of the Weather Advisory

An Atlantic tropical wave is expected to affect Guyana tonight. Base on available satellite images and forecast models there are indications that this system will produce large amount of rainfall over regions 6(south), 8, 9 and 10. Coastal regions will also be affected but should have less rainfall than the hinterland

Current Conditions:

Coastal regions -: Cloudy to overcast skies with light to moderate showers and light intermittent rain accompanied by occasional gusty winds.

Hinterland regions-: Cloudy to overcast skies with moderate to heavy showers, light intermittent rain and isolated thundershowers accompanied by strong gusty winds.

Expected Condition: These conditions are expected to continue for the next 12 -24 hours. Flash Flood warning is in effect for flood prone areas within Regions 1 to 4.

Rainfall expected to range between 20.0 mm and 60.0 mm for the next 12hrs over coastal regions and greater than 60.0 mm over for next 12hrs over hinterland regions.

The Hydrometeorological Services is monitoring this situation and will issue update(s) as need arise.

Spring Tide Advisory is in effect as Residents of coastal, riverain and low-lying areas are advised to take precautions. Low tide will be at 23:55 at 0.86m and high tide will be at 05:39 hrs at 2.81meters.

Waves and sea conditions will be rough reaching a height of 2.7 meters in open waters.
