The collapse of a log bridge between Mabura and Kurupukari has forced several trucks to line up for almost two days now, even as repair work continues feverishly to allow traffic to again flow freely, a source said Monday evening.

Among the vehicles in the line is a tanker carrying fuel for the Lethem Power Company (LPC).  A power company source said management has expressed some unease about the impact that could have on electricity generation if the vehicle does arrive in Lethem soon.

Demerara Waves Online News was told that the bridge collapsed late Saturday. While light vehicles were being allowed to pass the area, minibus operators have been told to cease operations until the bridge is restored during Tuesday. Officials were not immediately sure whether a temporary bypass would be built to allow for the shuttling of passengers.

Mekdeci Mining Company (MMC), which is responsible for the maintenance of the roadway in that area, has rushed men and equipment to the area for emergency works.
