Woman allegedly with Spain-bound cocaine refused bail

A Guyanese woman who allegedly attempted to smuggle cocaine to Spain through the post office was Friday arraigned on a cocaine trafficking charge and remanded to prison.

She is 49-year old Sandra Daniels of 2 Dennis Street, Sophia, Greater Georgetown.

Appearing before City Magistrate Judy Latchman on May 8, she pleaded not guilty to having been in possession of 274 grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

She was refused bail and remanded to court until June 2 when she will make another court appearance for report.

The prosecution’s case ns that the woman allegedly went to the Guyana Post Office Corporation, Robb Street, Georgetown to post a carton to Plaza de Octubre, Valencia, Spain.

The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) said the box contained salon products such as false nails, files, nail decoration and 42 buffers. An examination revealed that the cocaine was allegedly in plastic in the middle of each buffer.

The court was further told that Daniels further informed investigators that a close male friend from Spain visited Guyana two weeks ago and requested that she post the items to him.

The woman, who was not represented by a lawyer, said she was unable to see with her naked eyes what the contents of the product were.

The woman claimed that was employed at Banks DIH as a receptionist and the she was a mother of five children.

While the woman said she had not have any previous or pending matters, she admitted that she had been sentenced to seven years imprisonment in the United Kingdom for drug trafficking when CANU Prosecutor, Oswald Massiah informed the court of her past record.

However, she said she only served 33 months and was deported.
