A man destined for New York was Monday morning arrested at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport allegedly with a quantity of cocaine baked into pastries, a senior anti-drug agent said.

The illicit substance weighed about seven kilogrammes.

According to the official, the cocaine was found by agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) in two suitcases belonging to the 37-year old man from Canje, East Berbice.

He was scheduled to leave on Caribbean Airlines flight, BW 526.

Meanwhile, the CANU official said they were still investigating the discovery of a large quantity of cocaine in fake awarra last month. No one has been charged in connection with that find although the shipper and the exporter had been initially arrested.

The awarra was part of a large consignment of fruits and vegetables that were packed for export to Canada through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
