Shoplifters fined

Two shoplifters were Thursday fined a total of GUY$70,000 for stealing items from the Shell Service Station on Regent and King Streets, Georgetown.

Michael Ashby,37, of Roxanne Burnham Gardens pleaded guilty to stealing two bars of Cadbury Chocolate valued GUY$1,500 from the service station. He was fined GUY$30,000 or five months imprisonment when he appeared before City Magistrate, Ann Mc Lennan.

Ashby stole the items on March 26. Police Prosecutor, Dinero Jones told the court that about 1:53 PM, an alarm was raised and public spirited citizens arrested the man. The stolen items were taken out of his pants pocket.
And one day earlier, 53-year old Derrick Persaud was caught stealing one tyre gel and one bottle of Ovaltine that valued a total of GUY$3,285 from the same filling station.

Persaud-an upholster/joiner of 45 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice- pleaded guilty and was fined GUY$40,000 or six months imprisonment.
Persaud was caught about 1PM after trying to escape. A security officer attached to the entity caught Persaud outside with the items and the occurrence was reported to police.

Police Prosecutor, Dinero Jones said Persaud was convicted on May 8, 2013 for committing a on a similar at Bounty Supermarket and he was jailed for 14 months.
