A member of the  Guyana Sex Worker Coalition, Tishana Edwards was Tuesday remanded to prison on a charge of being in possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Twenty-three year old Tishana Edwards of Lot 1 Victoria Road, Plaisance pleaded not guilty to the charge when she appeared before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.  The Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) alleged that the woman was carrying 2.092 kilogrammes of cocaine in cream liquer.

She was arrested early February 23- Mashramani Day – while being an outgoing passenger on a Fly Jamaica flight to New York.

The woman , who is also the daughter of the Executive Director of the Sex Worker Coalition Miriam Edwards, was refused bail because no special reason was given. The matter has been transferred to the Providence Magistrates Court where Edwards would appear on February 28.

Her lawyer asked for bail on grounds that she has a baby. Prosecutor Oswald Massiah objected, saying that the child could give the baby to a relative to be taken care of.
