Former Minister of Local Govt Minister Ganga Persaud

Ganga Persaud, who recently resigned as Local Government Minister, has refused to attend sittings of the National Assembly and could soon be replaced, a top Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) official said Monday.

“The comrade has taken positions on a voluntary basis,” PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee told a news conference at the party’s headquarters, Freedom House.

He also said the PPP was examining the responsibilities of the portfolio before appointing a successor to Persaud who resigned early last month. “Up to this point in time we have discussed the matter preliminarily but we havent come to any formal decision on it,”  he said.

Unlike President Donald Ramotar who had refused to say whether he had asked Persaud to resign, Rohee was more forthright in saying that the government had severed ties with that Central Committee member.

At the time of announcing his resignation, Persaud had said that his decision was made to allow him to address a number of personal maters.

Junior Minister of Local Government Norman Whittaker has taken over full responsibility fore ministry temporarily.
