Rawlewayne Payne

Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) political activist, Rawlewayne Payne died on Saturday in hospital after a brief illness just over one month since he was married, a family member said.

He was 42.

Payne was a former Region Four (Upper Demerara-Mahaica) Councillor, having served from 2006 to 2011. He was also a former executive member of the PNCR’s youth arm, Youth and Student Movement (YSM).

His wife said he was diagnosed with dengue fever and possibly leptospirosis and hepatitis. An autopsy would be performed on Monday.

She recalled that he was in the flooded yard on Hadfield Street, Lodge about two weeks ago assisting her with a fallen clothes line. Last Friday he began complaining of flu symptoms and joint pain. Doctors initially treated him for a cold by prescribing Panadol and other cold medicine, she said.

When he was eventually diagnosed with dengue fever, she said the medicine for that illness “was not staying down” as he vomited. Mrs. Payne said her husband reluctantly returned to the Georgetown Public Hospital on Wednesday when he was admitted.

He remained an in-patient until he passed away Saturday morning.

His death comes little more than one month after he was married on December 21, 2013.

Payne fathered two children.
