An East Bank Essequibo woman is dead after being stabbed more than two dozen times allegedly by a man with whom she had a relationship.

She has been identified as Sookdai Basdeo, 37, of Tuschen, EBE. The woman was found in her home around 7.45AM Monday with stab wounds about her body. The suspect, Iqbal Mohammed, reportedly turned himself in to the police and is said to be assisting the investigation.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud told Demerara Waves Online News that Basdeo was living with a partner but seemed to have continued the relationship with the suspect with whom she was previously involved. Seelall said the suspect, a fisherman, reportedly came in from sea and visited Basdeo who was home alone at the time.

He reportedly asked her for them to be a couple again but Seelall related that the man told officers that Basdeo was afraid her partner would harm her. An argument reportedly ensued and it was during this that the woman was stabbed a reported 29 times according to Seelall.
