The death toll on Guyana’s roads has been pushed to 83 with the latest road fatality being that of a hire car driver late Monday afternoon.

He has been identified as 56-year old Felix Layne of Onderneeming Sandpit Road.

The accident occurred about 5 PM when he exited from Sandpit Road and swerved on the main road in the path of an oncoming Canter truck. The truck driver has been detained for questioning.

But from all accounts Layne was wrong because, according to one of the passengers, he did not heed shouts at him to stop the car because of the approaching truck.

Sources at the Suddie Hospital confirmed that Layne was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. However, when he was taken by ambulance to the Supenaam speedboat stelling about 6 PM, he was dead and was taken to the mortuary instead.

Two passengers received minor injuries.

The number of persons who have died on Guyana’s roads for the corresponding period last year was 89.

The most serious accident in recent days involved a sand truck and a Mahdia-bound minibus on the Coverden Public Road. Four persons were killed in that collision.
