GPL blocks garbage dumpers from Sophia substation access road

The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) on Monday said it has taken steps to block persons from dumping and burning rubbish on an access road to the new Sophia Substation, saying that such activity could disrupt power supply.

“As part of the measures taken to deter the public from further engaging in the illegal dumping and burning of garbage within the vicinity of the aforementioned pathway, the Company has erected a barrier preventing unauthorized person(s), animal drawn carts and vehicles from entering the area,” the power company said in a statement.

This pathway-located east of PNC Headquarters, Congress Place, Sophia- is the only access to GPL’s New Sophia Substation.

GPL appealed to the public to desist from dumping and burning garbage along the recently constructed fair weather access leading to the New Sophia Substation, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.

“The Company cautions that burning garbage within close proximity of the power lines located along the roadway can result in serious consequences including damage  to the utility poles, lines, fibre optic cables linking GPL systems and the disruption of electricity supply immensely,” added GPL.

The New Sophia Substation is one of the seven being constructed under GPL’s Infrastructure Development Programme aimed at improving the quality of electricity being supplied to customers.

GPL added that it was engaging the Georgetown Mayor and City Council to assist in alleviating the problem.
