A man, who says he is a gold miner, is Thursday expected to be arraigned for the illegal possession of a telescopic rifle, handgun and ammunition.

He was among seven persons who were arrested earlier this week in a F-150 pickup where one .44 Harrington and Richardson telescopic rifle with 38 rounds and one .32 Taurus pistol with seven rounds were found.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), according to sources, has recommended that the seven persons be freed without charge.

Laurel Thomas, who is the owner-driver of the pickup, has told investigators that he owned the weapons- the rifle for hunting and the handgun for personal protection.

Saying that he is a miner in Konawaruk, Potaro, Thomas said after he was robbed twice and his wife assaulted he decided to obtain the handgun. Investigators said he has never applied for gun permits.
