Shack Hotel

A man on Wednesday committed suicide in a city hotel, moments after he attempted to strangle his female companion.

The body of 33-year old Egerton Grant was discovered in Room 12 on the third flat of The Shack, Norton Street, Werk-en-Rust. He is from Linden.

Police and hotel staff discovered the body of the still clothed man on the bed. Nearby was a bottle with what was suspected to be a high-odour rat poison. “Whatever he used, he has the whole place smelling,” a hotel staffer told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com).

His female companion has been taken into custody to assist police with their probe.

The official said that the couple checked in around 9:15 Wednesday morning for one day. Both of them were carrying bags.

About 45 minutes later, the 23-year old woman escaped downstairs and told hotel staff that Grant had attempted to strangle her. She said she kicked him in his groin and began hollering.

“Nothing like this ever happen at this hotel since we started in 1976,” said a staffer who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Based on the woman’s account, the man had premeditated his actions under the guise of attempting to repair the broken relationship with the woman.
