Clerk of the National Assembly Sherlock Isaacs says he wants out of the “confusion” that is the 10th Parliament.

In a telephone interview with Demerara Waves Online News on Tuesday Isaacs revealed that he had earlier approached President Donald Ramotar about resigning from the post he held since 2002.

“He refused to allow me to demit office.”

Isaacs explained that his decision stemmed from the “confusion” in the current incarnation of the parliament which sees the first minority government in the country’s history.

According to the Clerk, he is writing the president again to petition that he be allowed to step down.

“Fed up,” was how he described his feelings, adding that it was the “worst” parliament during his tenure.

Isaacs and Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman have butted heads on at least one occasion that was made public. That matter related to government amendments to an APNU motion in January for which the Speaker told the House he had not received adequate notice from the Parliament Office.

Isaacs responded in a letter that was released to the media and in which he lodged his dissatisfaction at the Speaker’s remarks.

He also commented that it was not the first time that Trotman had been “publicly critical” of him and the parliamentary staff.

Isaacs has been working in the public service since 1972.
