Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Donald Ramotar has approved the promotion of Chief-of-Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Commodore Gary Best to the rank of Rear Admiral, the Government Information Agency (GINA) said on Saturday.

The swearing in ceremony will take place on Monday, August 19, 2013 at the Office of the President.

A Commodore is equivalent to a Brigadier and a Rear Admiral is the same level as a Major General.

Best retires on September 20 when he attains the age of 55. A retirement parade is scheduled for September 17.

He was appointed Chief of Staff in 2007, succeeding Brigadier Edward Collins.

Commodore Best was commissioned in February 1981.He has completed several maritime courses in Brazil, Jamaica and the United States. He has held numerous appointments in the Coast Guard and GDF headquarters.

The Chief of Staff, who is a Caribbean-trained lawyer, has been decorated with several Guyanese, Venezuelan, Brazilian and French medals.
