Suspect in fisherman’s killing among 28 arrested

Almost two weeks after the decomposed body of fisherman Quincy Sooklall was pulled from the Demerara River, a suspect in his killing was early Friday morning arrested, police said.

The suspect was among 23 men and five women who were arrested during raids in Albouystown, Alberttown, Sophia, Meadow Bank, Charlestown and West Front Road. The detainees were expected to be questioned in connection with into possession of narcotics, armed robbery and break and enter and larceny.

Also arrested was 27-year old Lawrence Rodrigues of Light Street, Alberttown who was sentenced in ex parte trial to four years imprisonment in June of this year on charges of possession of firearm without licence and possession of ammunition without licence.

The body Sooklall was found in the Demerara River on August 03. He had been missing since August 1, 2013.

The privately-owned Stabroek News newspaper had quoted his mother as saying that her only child had been apparently shot his chest with a high caliber weapon before his hands and feet were tied and his body was dumped into the river.
