Ramotar, Jagdeo, Anthony garner most votes at PPP Congress

President and PPP General Secretary Donald Ramotar has garnered the most votes in the election of the members of the party’s Central Committee with his predecessor Bharrat Jagdeo coming in second.

The results were released on Sunday as the PPP’s 30th Congress ended at Port Mourant, East Berbice.

The 10 new faces are Nigel Dharamlall, Shyam Nokta, Vishwa Mahadeo, Desmond Kissoon, David Armogan, Omar Sharif, Mohammed Haroon Hussein, Brian Allicock, Kwame Mc Coy and Chitreka Dass. Philomena Sahoye-Shury who was not elected at the previous congress secured a spot in this year’s.

Notably absent are Ralph Ramkarran and Moses Nagamootoo who resigned and the deceased stalwarts- Janet Jagan, Reepu Daman Persaud and Moti Lall. Haripersaud Nokta did not seek re-election and Ulric Ramanah’s withdrawal was announced on voting day- Saturday. Also not voted in this time around are veteran PPP members Shirley Edwards, Cyril Belgrave and Mitra Devi Ali.

Returning Officer, Mohammed Shaw had said that there were 1,096 eligible voters. When the results were announced on Sunday no mention was made of actual number of ballots cast or spoilt votes.
