Home Ministry “dismayed” at alleged police beating of Rupununi woman

Distressed at the alleged beating of a Rupununi woman by a policeman, the Home Affairs Ministry on Monday said it was still awaiting an official report on the incident.

“The Ministry is dismayed by this very serious allegation, which implicates a serving member of the Guyana Police Force,” the ministry said in a statement.

Chief of Criminal Iinvestigations, Deputy Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud said the policeman has been already transferred to the Tactical Services Unit, even as the Divisional Commander is perusing the file before sending it to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

Roxanne Farias of St. Ignatius, Region Nine was allegedly beaten by a policeman in Lethem on June 8.

The Home Affairs Ministry sought to assure citizens that such conduct by serving members of the Guyana Police Force “will not be condoned, and further that there is no place in the Guyana Police Force for ‘rogue cops’.”

According to the subject ministry responsible for internal security, government aims to have a police service comprised of Officers who discharge their responsibilities to the citizens of Guyana with the highest level of professionalism.

Residents have said that the woman’s male sibling was beaten unconscious by the officer  who they described as burly and being hot-tempered.

During the beating the young man’s sister , Roxanne , who is employed by the Ministry of Agriculture in the region as a  Plant Operator , had gone to the rescue her brother and she was reportedly beaten about her body including her head and face. P

The incident was witnessed by many in the area and was reported to the police officer’s superiors at the Lethem Police station.
