Mahdia teacher accused of sexual misconduct with male student

A teacher of the Mahdia Secondary School, who was caught allegedly in a compromising position with a male student, is being investigated for alleged sexual misconduct and he has been sent on leave, officials said.

Chief Education Officer Olato Sam said the male teacher has been already sent on leave last week and further action would depend on the outcome of a police probe.

“A man can’t face two disciplinary procedures at the same time so we always defer to the police and when their action is over then the ministry acts,” Sam told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com). The Education Ministry could possibly institute its own measures depending on the outcome of the case, he added.

Region Eight Chairman, Ronald Harsawack said the Potaro-Siparuni Schools’ Welfare Officer, police and the Regional Education Officer went to the teacher’s living quarters based on a tip-off.

Harsawack said a report on the alleged occurrence has been already forwarded to the Ministries of Education and Human Services.

The Fourth Form student has, according to Harsawack, already undergone a medical examination. The boy has since received counseling.

Harsawack could not confirm whether lubricants and sexual paraphernalia were found in the teacher’s quarters.
