A senior official of Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) was knocked down and killed on Sheriff Street, Campbelville.

The dead man has been identified as 57-year old Harry B. Singh, a Finance Manager at the local rum and beverage giant.

Police sources said the driver of the motor vehicle, Mervin Mangro of Friendship, East Bank Demerara, has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Singh, who lives on Garnett Street a few doors east of Royal Castle, was crossing Sheriff Street when he was struck down in the vicinity of Francine Fish Shop.

It is unclear why he was walking on the road around 10 PM. One eyewitness at the fish shop told a relative that Singh was killed on the spot.

Relatives said the husband and father of two girls and one boy, who reside overseas, grew up on Garnett Street-the same place where he lived.

Singh and his wife  were holidaying abroad but he returned home last month to resume duty from vacation leave, a relative said. The children and their mother are currently arranging to return home because of Singh’s death.
