A businessman was shot and robbed outside the High Court shortly after leaving a city commercial bank, reports say.

A woman, who was passing by at the same time, was also shot when one of the bandits opened fire.

Fifty-eight-year-old John Karpen of Little Abary, Mahaicony sustained a gunshot wound to his right knee.

The woman, 31-year old Cherilee Cosbert, was shot to her left leg just below her knee.

The shopkeeper said one of the men grabbed a pouch containing GUY$270,000.

Karpen believed that he was trailed from the Carmichael Street branch of Scotia Bank. He said he was seated in his bus on Charlotte Street just outside the High Court when the men pounced on him.

He said one of the bandits opened fire when he drew his handgun from his waist. Karpen said he declined to shoot the robbers because he feared hitting any of the several persons who were in the area at the time.

Cosbert said she and her friend were just exiting the High Court compound near the Deeds Registry when she was shot in the process.

The shooter has been described as a man with plaited hair.

The bandits escaped on a CG motorcycle.
