Police in Berbice have arrested a man they say was fetching a large quantity of marijuana in a vehicle.
Spokesman, Ivelaw Whittaker said the discovery of 34 kilograms of marijuana was made at a road block on the Number 51 Public Road, Corentyne around 7 am today.
Police said charges would be laid shortly.
He could most likely be charged with possession of a psychotropic substance for the purpose of trafficking.
Recently, police in the East Berbice area have been cracking down on huge marijuana cultivations in the Upper Corentyne area which is not easily accessible.
In the past, government has hinted that it would consider amending the laws to lighten penalties for small amounts of marijuana rather than mandatory jail terms.
The Rastafarian community has consistently but unsuccessfully lobbied government to decriminalize marijuana, saying that the herb is used for sacramental purposes.
