Randy Persaud packs up and leaves Guyana PDF Print E-mail

Randy Persaud packs up and leaves GuyanaGovernment propagandist, Professor Randy Persaud, who was engaged in several spats in the media with political opponents and government critics, has packed up and left Guyana.

He has re-migrated to the United States (US), well-placed sources told Demerara Waves.

Sources say that the sign-board on his office door at the Office of the President has been pulled down. Calls to both his office and cell-phone went unanswered.

However, it appears that Persaud plans to continue defending the Guyana government from abroad; his latest piece being in the July 9 edition of the Guyana Chronicle in which he denies that efforts are underway for President Jagdeo to secure a third term.

It is unclear whether the International Relations expert and political scientist will return closer to general and regional elections constitutionally due by December next year.

Persaud, who spent one year in the Press and Publicity section of the Office of the President, is said to have packed a 20-foot shipping container with his personal belongings for shipment overseas.

Academics at universities around the world are entitled to sabbaticals which could last one year. Mr. Persaud is a tenured Associate Professor at SIS, American University, Washington DC.

Persaud was one of several pro-government persons at one of the sessions of the 3rd Annual Conference of the Guyana Institute of Historical Research that was held on June 26 at the National Library. That session saw presentations on Guyana’s political landscape by Dr. Melissa Ifill and Political Scientist and newspaper columnist, Freddie Kissoon.

There, he and colleague Office of the President operative, Charles Ramson Jr. were booed, heckled and told to sit down by several legitimate attendees including academics and past and current members of the Working Peoples Alliance (WPA) and social and political activist, Mark Benschop.

Parts of the session were disrupted by several persons who were, according to Founder/Director Guyana Institute of. Historical Research, Hazel Woolford “paid hecklers who arrived with the specific intention of bringing the conference proceedings to a premature end” at the beginning of Mr. Kissoon’s presentation.

On the same day of the conference, a letter had appeared in the state-run Guyana Chronicle stating that Kissoon should not be allowed to make a presentation at the event.

Some express surprise that he has left. I knew that it was just a matter of time ! Last week it was Hanoman, now it is Persaud....the million dollar question is , who's next ?!?! Only a fool, someone who doesn't have options or a die-hard would continue in the very unhealthy relationship that consorting with the PPP has come to. Persaud is none of these. He has seen the writing on the wall and he has calculated that he has all to lose and nothing to gain from continuing the dalliance in which he has been engaged with the PPP in the last few years as their celebrity propagandist and mouthpiece. I guess that he has affirmed through direct experience the truism which tells us that "cum see me an cum liv wid me is two differen ting."
Even though he will never admit it, his very high profile association (oh creep, this word will be censored!)with the Jagdeo dictatorship has done some damage to his integrity as a once highly respected academic and internationalist in the diaspora. The fact that he has taken his leave now will go a far way in repairing the self-inflicted damage done. Something we must all (and moreso the PPP) remember is that we no longer live in a world in which we can whisper, plot, conspire, huddle under bottom houses, misrepresent truths, etc., and get away with it. Persaud knows this and he also knows that his tenure with Jagdeo has placed him under the glare of the international spotlight. His colleagues and potential employers are all watching ! Incidentally, the same goes for Hanoman.
They both had to go because unlike their former local professional masters, they are relatively sophisticated operators. More importantly however, they are both suvivors.....and they know that its only a matter of time before the sinking ship, the MV PPP, disappears in the tsunami created by the winds and sea of change that none of us in the global village can avoid!!!

What a relief for Guyanese tax-payers - for a useless person - robbing our coffers of 1 million dollars a month.

The ship is sinking and rats are the first to put for safely.

there will be much talk about Dr persaud leaving, but no need to speculate or condemn, it is my opinion that he was expressing his 'own' opinion during his tenure [in wharever capacity]albeit controversial to some, lets respect each other views be it in sync with ours or deeply constrasting. lets focus on the road that lies ahead, that is to build a better Guyana for us all.

It seems when some people in society makes comments it falls on listening ears..but when others comment it is reach with hostility...Randy is a citizen of this country and should be given his right to express his opinion
