BREAKING: Jagdeo’s nominees for GECOM Chairmanship “unacceptable”

President David Granger says Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo’s list of six names for GECOM Chairman is “unacceptable.”

He said the Constitution provides for the person to have been a judge.

“The only thing about the list is that it comprises six names,” Granger told a media brunch.

He noted that ultimately if the lists submitted by the Opposition Leader, he could go ahead and appoint an eligible person.

Jagdeo has submitted the names of Governance and Conflict Resolution Specialist, Lawrence Lachmansingh; Businesswoman, Rhyaan Shah; History Professor, James Rose; Retired Major General Norman Mc Lean;  Business Executive, Ramesh Dookhoo and Attorney-at-Law and Chartered Accountant, Christopher Ram.

    Now for the news……eh eh…..blackout?

  • rs dasai

NO. But he qualifies on other acceptable grounds.

The Constitution does say the Gecom chairman must be a judge OR someone of a legal background or of reputable standing. Otherwise, how did Dr. Steve Surujbally, a veterinarian who once headed the Guyana Livestock Development Corporation, become Gecom chairman? He never was a judge!

I’m on the road, but will copy and paste the actual wording when I get home. Folks, we have to make that effort to do research to better understand and further discussions. It’s not that hard; Google or Yahoo!

      Emile
Our experienced AG and CoStaff , Mr. Harmon so advised?

      • Emile_Mervin

Don’t know who advised Granger, but here is what I promised (from gecom.org.gy):

Appointment of the Chairperson and Commissioners:-
CHAIRMAN: The Chairman shall be a person who holds, has held or is qualified to hold the office of Judge of the High Court or the Court of Appeal or any other fit and proper person who is appointed from a list of six persons, who are not unacceptable to the President, submitted by the Leader of the Opposition after he has MEANINGFULLY consulted with the non-governmental political parties represented in the National Assembly. (I have to ask: what are these non-governmental political parties represented in the National Assembly?).
If the Leader of the Opposition does not submit such a list of persons then the President shall appoint a person who holds, has held or is qualified to hold the office of Judge of the High Court or the Court of Appeal. The current Chairman of the Commission was chosen by the President from a list of six persons submitted by the Leader of the Opposition. [See Constitution (Amendment) Act No. 2 of 2000]

MEMBERS: In addition to the Chairman, the Constitution (Amendment) Act No. 2 of 2000 also provides for the appointment of six (6) members of the Commission in the following manner:-
        (a) Three (3) members appointed by the President, acting in his own deliberate judgement.
        (b) Three (3) members appointed by the President acting on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition after he has meaningfully consulted the non-governmental opposition parties represented in the National Assembly. (I ask again: what exactly are these non-governmental opposition parties represented in the National Assembly?)

Under the existing provisions, a non-Guyanese cannot be appointed as Chairperson or member of the Commission.

Why suddenly you did not refer to the Constitution?
You know very well who is in charge of GECOM presently

  • Kassee

This does not look good. These people in power now r bold and appears, will do all that is necessary to remain in power.By any means.Burnham got away because, many said nothing and did nothing. Those who could have done something, were too scared or just did not care.Remains to see what will play out here. So,all the other Presidents before were wrong in appointing someone who was not a judge or not qualified to be.?Granger has it all wrong.Jagdeo was President and he did not know what Granger is now saying.?Granger should stop playing games.

The only experience PNC and Granger has is to rigged election and the ballots at GDF. Headquarters.

  • JP

But weight there is more if you pay for separate shipping & handling you could have a second Rigger in the election
That is what he meant to say
    Well done Granger

I said before, I will say again: this country is sliding to the point of no return. Unity, harmony, etc. are pipe dreams. This nation will shed tears of blood.
