Cops charged with bribery

Two policemen appeared before the courts on Tuesday after being the recipients of a bribery.

The charge against Rural Corporal Selwyn Elcana and Constable Dwayne Marshall is that on August 19, 2016, at Church St. Alberttown, they corruptly obtained GYD $60,000 from Deonarine Dowlateram.

The two, who allegedly obtained the money as reward for failing to pursue an assault charge on Dowlateram, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Elcana’s legal representative, Chandrawattie Persaud, on behalf of her client asked Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan for leniency. As reason, the attorney stated that the defendant is a single parent to three children, poses no flight risk, and was on a $100,000 station bail.

Marshall, who hails from 111 Half Mile Linden, was unrepresented.

The two were placed on $50,000 bail each, and the matter will be called again on October 26, 2016 for fixture.
