An illegal aircraft bearing what appears to be a United States (US) registration number was Wednesday discovered hidden in a clump of vegetation in southern Guyana.

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) said that on Tuesday September 13, 2016 it received information of an illegal aircraft at the Yupukari Airstrip, Region 9, Upper Demerara/Upper Takatu.

On Wednesday September 14, 2016 , the army said a joint GDF and Guyana Police Force (GPF) patrol was deployed to the area and a twin engine Cessna Aircraft was discovered at approximately 9:50 AM.

“Investigators from the GDF, GPF and CANU (Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit) are in the area conducting investigations. Additional information will be provided as they become available,” the GDF said in a statement.

Demerara Waves Online News was told that the aircraft was damaged and was awaiting repairs at the end of the current wet spell.

No one has been arrested.

Law enforcement agents were continuing to examine the plane for any traces of illegal items and if it was fitted to accommodate additional fuel tanks to facilitate extra long distance flights.

In the past, aircraft have been found in Guyana with illegal foreign registration numbers, giving rise to the need to cooperate with international partners in confirming the true registration of those planes.
