Key AFC Berbice member resigns from Region Six chairmanship; search begins for someone with “administrative skill”

Dr. Veerasammy Rammaya, who had once distanced himself from the Alliance For Change (AFC) because he had been dissatisfied with a government job offer after the coalition won last year’s general elections, has now resigned from the post of Regional Executive Officer of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

The Ministry of Communities said Tuesday that a search was underway for someone who could help manage the region properly.  “The Ministry wishes to assure the people of Region Six that no effort will be spared to ensure the region is provided with a replacement with the administrative skill to deliver the effective leadership to the region in the provision of services,”  the Ministry of Communities.

Ramayya’s resignation is dated August 10, 2016 and it takes effect on September 15, 2016.

Concerns had been raised by the opposition about Veerasammy’s accounting skills and his suitability for the top regional job which is under the political control and chairmanship of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC). Rammaya had been often engaged in bickering with the PPP-controlled council over the management of that agricultural-based region.

Now the Ministry of Communities, says it has shortlisted three persons from among whom one would be selected to run the affairs of Region Six.

The Ministry of Communities announced Ramayya’s resignation in a press statement, six days after he decided to leave the job. “Consequent to his resignation, the ministry acknowledged receipt of the notice and expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ramayya for his service to the Regional Democratic Council and the people of Region Six,” the Ministry of Communities said in a statement.

“Although his tenure at the region was short-lived, it has been a remarkable one,” the ministry added.
