PPP gears up for Congress date

The People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) is this weekend expected to decide when Congress- the highest decision making body- would be held, party General Secretary, Clement Rohee said Tuesday.

He said the congress is scheduled to be held this year.

Rohee said once a decision is taken on Saturday, June 4, 2016, the agenda items would be formulated as part of preparations by the Congress Committee.

He said the Central Committee would also discuss the existing political situation in Guyana and receive contributions on various issues from members.

The 35-member Central Committee includes the 15-member Executive Committee.

Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo has said that he was unconcerned about when Congress would be held.  Jagdeo has shrugged off questions about his political future inside the party and whether he was interested in running for the presidency again.

Sources have told Demerara Waves Online News that Jagdeo appears to be at the helm of a clique that favours a virtual changing of the guard that could result in several long-serving members being voted out of the executive and replaced by persons who favour him.

The High Court has agreed that the two-term presidential limit is unconstitutional because that amendment was done by the parliament instead of a referendum. That decision has since been challenged by the Court of Appeal.
