Hours after it was revealed that the Chairman of the Alliance For Change had tendered his resignation, Nigel Hughes has spoken out on his decision to resign saying it became “difficult.”

Hughes in a statement on Social Media confirmed that he had tendered his resignation after serving as Party Chairman for several years.

“My continuing to act as Chairman of the party became difficult and untenable,” was the only explanation offered by Hughes for his resignation.

Hughes’ decision to quit the number two spot in the AFC was made at a statutory Management Committee meeting of the party on Monday.

In a statement, the party did not say specifically what was Hughes’ decision, only saying that “Chairman Nigel Hughes made an announcement with regard to his Chairmanship of the party.”

However, reports indicate that AFC Leader Khemraj Ramjattan hopes that by some means he will be able to make Hughes rescind his resignation.

On Monday persons had protested outside of the Kaieteur News and had labeled Hughes’ as “anti-coalition.”

This was followed the AFC issuing a statement which distanced Ramjattan and Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman from a statement it had issued on Sunday.

In that statement coming, after a leadership retreat, the AFC called for State Minister Joseph Harmon to be stripped of some of his responsibilities.

However, President David Granger has stated that he will seek some clarification from the AFC on the issue.

The topic is expected to come up for discussion at today’s cabinet meeting.
