Former Home Affairs Minister and Leader of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Clement Rohee says that President David Granger should take immediate steps to dismiss Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan over the recent Camp Street riots.

From last Wednesday, the Georgetown Prison has experienced a period of unrest which culminated with the death of 17 prisoners, and the injury of several others.

Rohee at a press conference on Monday stated that the President have overlooked one critical issue, that is, the dismissal of Ramjattan.

President “Granger has overlooked the dismissal of Prakash Ramjattan as the Security Minister of this country,” said the PPP General Secretary.

Rohee admitted that while the PPP did not leave a perfect prison system when it was voted out of office under 12 months ago, whatever challenges existed could have been dealt with.

“The Granger administration stands condemned. Heads must roll for this unforgiveable and unforgettably episode in the hierarchy of the Security Sector,” he said.

Rohee predicted disaster for Guyana’s security administration if the prisoners were able to organize themselves and called for immediate reforms to be implemented.

He said that the APNU+AFC administration must look at all the prison centers around the country and not just Georgetown.

“The informal, illegal networking among prisoners at the various locations are unimaginable and challenging, consequently they pose serious security risks to the country as a whole were they to be activated in a coordinated manner at the same time,” said Rohee.

Questioned about prison woes under the PPP, Rohee accused journalists of covering and providing excuses for the APNU+AFC administration. (Jomo Brusheildon Paul)
