Last Updated on Thursday, 3 March 2016, 12:27 by Denis Chabrol

One inmate of the Georgetown Prison died and six others were badly burnt about their bodies as a result of a fire during an unrest at the penitentiary, sources confirmed.

Authorities said an undisclosed number of other prisoners sustained minor burns but they would not be taken for treatment immediately.

One of the inmates died at the Georgetown Hospital while receiving emergency medical treatment. Police have been also deployed at the health care facility.

Thursday’s fire was the biggest in the four attempts by inmates to burn the wooden and concrete structure that occupies the block that is circled by Camp, D’Urban, Bent and John Streets.
