Min. of Education Rupert Roopnaraine hospitalised

Guyana’s Minister of Education, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine has been hospitalised, but he is scheduled to be discharged on Thursday, usually reliable sources said.

Since his admission, he has been showing signs of recovery, according to the sources.

Roopnaraine  was absent from the consideration of 2016 budgetary estimates of expenditure for his ministry on Monday, February 22. Instead, Junior Minister of Education, Culture Youth and Sport, Nicolette Henry, supported by top officials of the ministry, responded to several questions from opposition People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) parliamentarians.

In recent months, he visibly appeared to be less energetic.

Roopnaraine, 73, is prominent member of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) which fought valiantly against the then People’s National Congress (PNC)-led administration of then Prime Minister, Forbes Burnham.

A strong advocate of multi-racial politics, Dr Roopnaraine is a major architect of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).

I hope that, in event Roopnarine has to step down, the coalition will replace him with another WPA candidate and not automatically promote the Junior Minister, because the coalition has to reflect continued representation by coalition parties at the same cabinet level.

This is a quiet concern I harbored for some time because I don’t want to see a coalition cabinet dominated by APNU members or appointees. Now, who from the WPA is next in line for appointment? The same question goes for AFC.

And even as I send get well wishes to Roop, I want to draw attention to the fact the coalition does have senior officials in the late 60s to 70s age range. I leave it at that…for now.
