Rohee wants official declaration on GINA coverage

The Leader of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Clement Rohee says he wants an official statement from the Government Information Agency (GINA) relative to the coverage of the PPP in Parliament.

This is after President David Granger, in an announcement that shocked many, stated that GINA should also give coverage to the Opposition PPP in the National Assembly and not shut them out as was done under past administrations.

This was in direct contravention to a position adopted by the Director of Public Information (DPI) Imran Khan who stated that it was not GINA’s responsibility to cover the Opposition.

Granger however stated “as far as I am concerned the Government Information Services, the Government News Agency must cover all three branches of government, Legislative, Executive and Judicial…[people] have to be better informed and you cannot inform the people by depriving them of information."

But this statement is not enough for the PPP General Secretary with Rohee declaring “I take it with a pinch of salt.”

Rohee told reporters on Monday that GINA should issue a statement on its policy to all of the political Parties that contested General and Regional Elections informing them of the change in policy.

“I believe that GINA must write to everybody…conveying to them the policies…how much airtime they are allotted and things like that,” the General Secretary stated.

Rohee also pointed out that there must be some clarity coming from the Office of the DPI within the Office of the Prime Minister.

“That statement ought to be balanced against what Imran Khan stated and what Nagamootoo is saying,” he said.
