The Mazaruni Prison

Authorities at the Mazaruni Prison say a  man convicted four years ago for slitting his wife’s throat might have escaped from custody Thursday while cutting firewood.

Police confirmed that the prison authorities notified them that one of the inmates could not have been found.  Investigators were sent to the prison but up to early Thursday night there was no feedback.

Demerara Waves Online News was told Chetram Nowrang jumped off a tractor while it was returning for fuel.  When the tractor returned to the bush where the firewood was being cut, Nowrang was not seen.

Subsequent checks were made and the convict was not located.

On October 31, 2011 he was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of manslaughter committed on his wife, Jasoda Budhoo, in May, 2007.

He was originally charged with murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.
