Fire early Saturday morning destroyed a house at La Grange, West Bank Demerara, raising fresh concerns about the absence of a fire station in the area.

The cause of the blaze at the unoccupied building was unknown.

Residents said a Muslim only known as Brother Yahyah once lived there.

The now destroyed building was immediately behind the La Grange Police Station.

A Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco) Land Rover responded , renewing calls for a fire station in that area to be opened. That area is served by fire tenders from Ruimveldt, Leonora and Central Fire Station.

The West Bank Demerara has become densely populated in recent years, particularly with the development of new housing areas like the one at Parfaite Harmonie.
