Acting Chief Justice Ian Chang.

The search would shortly begin for someone to act as Chief Justice because Senior Counsel, Ian Chang is about to proceed on pre-retirement leave.

Attorney General, Basil Williams said Chang’s successor would be the subject of meaningful consultations between President David Granger and Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo.

“The question of a vacancy occurring in the Office of Chief Justice would arise very shortly and when the Chief Justice goes on leave, obviously somebody has to act in his position,” told a news conference.

Williams said Acting Chief Justice Chang would reach retirement age in February, 2016.

The Attorney General said he was talking with President Granger about the appointment of someone to act as Chief Justice.

The substantive Chief Justice is Carl Singh who has been acting as Chancellor since Chang was appointed to his current post in 2000.

The Attorney General said Chang has not taken leave since assuming office 15 years ago, and the policy of the four-month old government is that everyone must take his or her leave when it is due.

Chang has 10 weeks leave for this year alone.
