Vice President and Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan has made a final plea for persons in possession of illegal firearms to hand them over to the police.

This comes in light of the extension of the Gun Amnesty Programme by the Ministry. The programme was supposed to have concluded on September 30 but received a 14-day extension.

Speaking with the media outside his office on Thursday afternoon, Ramjattan warned that persons should make all efforts to hand in their guns or face prosecution when the hammer of justice falls.

“Please bring it in, your Christmas will not be nice if you don’t and you get caught” said Ramjattan sounding a final warning.

He noted that since the government has warned about a crackdown, there has been an increased effort to submit illegal guns and ammunition.

“I think that people are getting more aware as to the necessity to bringing in the firearms and additional ammunition…because of that it was decided that we should extend it,” he said.

Police on Thursday stated that already, 142 guns were given to the police along with almost 1900 rounds of ammunition.

Police stated that stations across the country received 121 shotguns, 10 pistols, 7 air rifles, 3 revolvers and 1 AK-47.
