Citizenship and immigration services to restore records dating back to 1920

The Department of Citizenship and Immigration services is set to restore the records of the General Registrar’s Office (GRO) dating all the way back to the 1920s. 

This was disclosed by the head of department Winston Felix durinh consideration of the 2015 estimates of expenditure.

The department is held under the Ministry of the Presidency and is responsible for developing strategies “to capture, maintain and secure all events of birth, deaths and marriages as they occur by way of registration and the issuance of the relevant certificates.”

The agency head said that the restoration of GRO records will be from “1920 to 1986 and eventually 1987.” This information will also be computerized, he revealed. 

The new agency will see some $150m expended on the computerization services and $10m for the restoration process.
