CARIBBEAN ADVANCED PROFICIENCY EXAMINATION

REPORT ON PRELIMINARY RESULTS

          BACKGROUND

            In May/June 2015, nine hundred and sixty one (961) candidates from

            nine(9) Secondary Schools and five (5) Private centres wrote the

            Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination in Guyana.

            The fourteen Examination Centres were:

                        Region 3:                   SaraswatiVidyaNiketan

                        Georgetown:             The Bishops’ High, Queen’s College, St Joseph’s High,

St Rose’s High,St Stanislaus College, New Guyana Sch, Adult Education Association, Guyana Private (Theatre Guild) and Chase’s Academy.

            Candidates offered Units in twentynine subject areas. Each Unit comprises three

            Modules (equivalent to 150 Credit Hours), and is separately examined and

            certified.

            Candidates from Guyana offered fifty six(56) units at this year’s examination.

The Single Unit Subjects offered this year were:

                        Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies.

                       
The Double Unit Subjects offered were:

Accounting, Agricultural Science, Applied Mathematics, Art & Design, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science,Digital Media, Economics, Electrical & Electronic Technology, Entrepreneurship, Environmental Science, Food & Nutrition, Geography, Geometrical & Mechanical Eng. Drawing, History, Information Technology, Law,Literatures in English, Management of Business, Performing Arts, Physical Education & Sports, Physics, Pure Mathematics, Sociology, Spanish and Tourism.

The results for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination are reported on

aseven-point scale – Grades 1 – VII. Candidates attaining Grades 1 – V have attained an

acceptable standard for matriculation purposes, with Grade One representing an

excellent performance, while Grade Two and Three represent very good and good

standardsof performance respectively.

The overall pass rate in 2015is 87.54.This is anincrease from 2014 where a pass rate of 85.07% was attained. An increase was noted in the number of candidates securing Grades I to V passes.

The gender distribution of the overall pass rate is 35.2% males and 64.8% females.

In the following twenty four (24) units, candidates obtained a 100% pass rate (with Grade one to five passes):  Agricultural Science Unit 1; Art & Design Unit 1 and Unit 2; Food and Nutrition Unit 1; Geography Unit 1 and Unit 2; Information Technology Unit 1 and Unit 2; Spanish Unit 1 and Unit 2; Physical Education & Sports Unit 1 and Unit 2; Entrepreneurship Unit 1 and Unit 2; Tourism Unit 1 and Unit 2; Accounting Unit 2; Computer Science Unit 2; Electrical & Electronic Technology Unit 2; Food & Nutrition Unit 2; Digital Media Unit 2 and Performing Arts Unit 2(Cinematic Arts, Dance & Drama).

Further, in the following twenty six (26) Units the pass rate of candidates was 75%or higher with Grade One to Fivepasses: Accounting Unit 1; Applied Mathematics Unit 1; Biology Unit 1 and Unit 2; Caribbean Studies Unit 1; Communication Studies Unit 1; Computer Science Unit 1; Economics Unit 1; Environmental Science Unit 1 and Unit 2; Law Unit 1 and Unit 2; Literatures in English Unit 1 and Unit 2; Management of Business Unit 1 and Unit 2; Physics Unit 1 and Unit 2; Sociology Unit 1 and Unit 2; Digital Media Unit 1; Agricultural Science Unit 2; Applied Mathematics Unit 2; Chemistry Unit 2; Economics Unit 2 and Pure Mathematics Unit 2.

In five(5) units candidates obtained a pass rate of 50% or higher (but below 75%) with Grade One to Five passes. The units are: Chemistry Unit 1; Geometrical & Mechanical Eng. Drawing Unit 1; History Unit 1; Pure Mathematics Unit 1 and History Unit 2.

Agricultural Science  Unit 1 and Unit 2, Entrepreneurship Unit 1 and Unit 2, Physical Education & Sports Unit 1 and Unit 2; Performing Arts Unit 2 and Tourism Unit 1 and Unit 2 were written for the first time in 2015. A 100% pass rate was secured in all of these Units except Agricultural Science Unit 2 where a 95.45% was recorded.

Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies continue to record and over 95% pass ratewhile Pure Mathematics Unit 1 declined from 57.73% in 2014 to 54.98% in 2015.

Several candidates recorded outstanding performances at this year’s Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination. Among the top performers are Cecil Cox, Larissa Whiltshire and Sasha Woodroffe all of Queen’s College and Shonta Noel of St Rose’s High who secured Grade One passes in six units.

REPORT ON PRELIMINARY RESULTS

Background

In 2015, there was a decrease in the number of candidates who wrote the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examination. The statistics which follow reflect the performance of both public and private school candidates.  It must be noted that the private candidates amounted to approximately 33% of the total entries.

Analysis of Results

The analysis of the 2015 CSEC results revealed that the overall pass rate at the General and Technical proficiencies for Grade One to Three was 62.72% as opposed to 60.21% in 2014.  The overall 2015 Grade One to Grade Four pass rate was 84.4%.

These rates compared with last year, indicate a marginal increase in the Grade One to Three passes. 

Candidates from Guyana wrote thirty-five (35) subjects at the examination. 

Of these subjects the results indicated excellent performances in fifteen (15) subjects where the Grade One to Three passes exceeded seventy five percent (75%).  The fifteen subjects are: Agriculture Science (DA), Agricultural Science (SA), Clothing & Textiles, Economics, Home Economics Management, Information Technology, Office Administration, Principles of Business,Religious Education, Theatre Arts, Electronic Document Preparation and Management, Physical Education & Sport, Additional Mathematics, Building Technology (Const.) and Building Technology (Woods).

Satisfactory performances were recorded in thirteen (13) subjects where the Grades One to Three passes exceeded fifty percent (50%) while Grades One to Four passes were in excess of seventy five percent (75%): Biology, Caribbean History, English B, Food & Nutrition, French, Geography, Integrated Science, Principles of Accounts, Social Studies, Spanish, Technical Drawing, Electrical & Electronic Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology. 

The Grade One to Three passes in English A and Mathematics both improved over last year’s performance. The English A pass rate is 49.36%, up from 46.98% in 2014 and 45.69% in 2013. The Mathematics pass rate is 45.07%, up from 38.75% in 2014 and 28.92% in 2013.

The overall performance in Chemistry, Physics, Visual Arts and Human & Social Biology was unsatisfactory.

Performance in English B remained relatively constant. In 2014 the Grade One to Three pass rate was 61.45% and 61.76% in 2015.

Excellent performances were recorded in Agriculture Science (SA) and Agricultural Science (DA). There was a general decline of Grade One to Three passes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics as compared to the 2014 performance.

In the Business Education subjects – the performance in Economics, Office Administration and Principles of Business was excellent. Satisfactory performance was recorded in Principles of Accounts with a Grade One to Three pass rate of 65.43%. Excellent performances were recorded in both Information Technology (General) and Electronic Document Preparation and Management, where the pass rates were 89.27% and 91.04% respectively.

Satisfactory performances were recorded in Caribbean History and Geography. The pass rate for Caribbean History improved from 56.39% in 2014 to 59.7% in 2015. The Geography Grade One to Three pass rate for 2015 is 53.59%.                        

In the Home Economics subjects, an increase wasrecorded in Clothing & Textiles; the 2014 pass rate was 63.41% as against 75% in 2015 however there was a decline in the pass rates for Food & Nutrition and Home Economic Management.

In the Industrial Technology subjects – Building Technology (Const), Building Technology (Woods) and Electrical & Electronic Technology recorded improvedperformances in Grade One to Three passes.Building Technology (Woods) improved from 72.15% in 2014 to 79.67% in 2015.

In the Modern Languages subjects – French and Spanish recorded satisfactory performances. The Grade One to Three pass rate for French is 54.96% in 2015.Performance in Spanish moved from 62.61% in 2014 to 60.51% in 2015.

Excellent performances wererecorded in Theatre Arts and Physical Education & Sports with Grade One to Three passes over 75%

Full analysis of individual candidates’ performances is not yet available. We have requested however, a list of candidates who have secured Grade Ones passes in eight or more subjects from the Caribbean Examinations Council.
