FLASH BACK: Royston King and Carol Sooba.

Carol Sooba was Friday officially fired from the post of Acting Town Clerk, weeks after she was sent on leave to pave the way for an investigation into how certain monies had been spent.

City Mayor Hamilton Green confirmed that Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan fired Sooba by letter. “We can exhale for a moment. She has been a millstone around us for years,” he told Demerara Waves Online News.

Green said Public Relations Officer of the Municipality, Royston King was tipped to become the new Town Clerk in keeping with a decision by the Council.

The Mayor said Sooba was yet to hand over Council’s property, but he could not say specifically what she had in her possession. “We have written her and she has refused to come to hand over,” he said.

The letter, titled Revocation of Service, informs Sooba that “your appointment as Town Clerk (ag) of the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown is hereby revoked” effective July 7, 2015 in accordance with the Municipal and District Council’s Act.

Sooba had been appointed by the then People’s Progressive Party (PPP)-led central government, although an interviewing panel had found that she had been unqualified for the position.

Prior to being sent on leave on May 25, 2015 , she had been provided with personal security that had been paid for by the then Ministry of Local Government.
