The owner of Hamson’s General Store on Regent Street, Georgetown was stabbed to death, but the motive appeared not to have been robbery, a top police officer said.

The body of 56-year old Farouk Ghanie was found in the yard of his residence at Collingwood Avenue, Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara.

Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Assistant Commissioner Leslie James said investigators were told that Ghanie and a former employee had a disagreement recently. He said crime sleuths were hoping to locate and speak with that man. “We understand that one of his staff mught have been laid off recently,” he said.

James said the motive for the robbery did not appear to be robbery. “From all appearances, it seemed not to be robbery,” he told Demerara Waves Online News. The door was ajar and the house appeared to be undisturbed.

Police said in a statement that the businessman’s body was found in his yard at about 9 AM Thursday “with suspected stab wounds.”
