American convicted for cocaine trafficking, elderly Guyanese man remanded

A young American citizen and an elderly Guyanese man on Thursday appeared in court on separate charges of cocaine possession for the purpose of trafficking to the United States.

Twenty-seven year old US Citizen Reuben Lang was sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined GUY$1.5 million for being in possession of 6.92 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. He was caught at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on April 16 with the drug in two suitcases.

Lang told the court that he is a poor security guard who was trying to make some money.

The prosecution’s facts are that anti-narcotics police saw several plastic packets taped to the the top and bottom of the suitcase, prompting them to conduct a field test which proved that it was cocaine.

Sixty-eight year old Arthur Manget pleaded not guilty to being in possession of 9.670 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. He was due to leave on a New York-bound flight when he was caught.

Manget was arrested on April 13 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. Manget, of 122 Old Road, Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry until April 30.
