A Communications Officer of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco) has been arrested and charged in the United States (US) for cocaine trafficking.

The privately-owned television news provider, Capitol News, said the 29-year old Adams attempted to sneak into the US with the illicit drug on April 7, 2015.

Adams, who is connected to a Basketball team in Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, arrived at the John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport  with two suitcases which he claimed he packed himself.

When the Customs agents inspected his suitcases, they found two pairs of athletic sneakers in each suitcase. The sneakers appeared unused and when the agents probed the heel area they found what field tested for cocaine.

According to the court documents, Adams acknowledged that the sneakers contained illegal drugs.

Adams is the fifth individual with links to Plaisance caught since the year began. The others were connected to the music industry in Guyana.

Capitol News also reported that on Saturday last April 11, 2015, another Guyanese, this time a 70 year old woman Olive Fowler was found with cocaine strapped in her underwear when she walked into the customs area at JFK. She was confronted and given a pat down search. The court documents indicate that the cocaine was under two layers of compressed shorts and her underwear. She had over 1.9 kilos.

Both Adams and Fowler are in federal custody.
