Key Club of Georgetown International Academy officially chartered

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA: The  Key Club of Georgetown International Academy was officially chartered as a member of the Kiwanis International Service Leadership Program, earlier this month under the auspices of Key Club International Caribbean Atlantic District.

Held on March 5, organisers said that momentous event marked the formal establishment of the first Key Club in Guyana. It was attended by the U.S Embassy’s Chargé d’affaires, Mr. Bryan Hunt; other members of the diplomatic corps; Chairman of the School Board, Mr. Albert Razick; Director of the Georgetown International Academy, Dr. Kelly Mekdeci, and other distinguished guests.

Though at first the rain seemed to have other plans for the evening, the program was executed in true Key Club style- chaired by Ms. Kayla Beharry and Master of Ceremonies of the night, Roshaad Lall, who aptly stated- “We can’t stop the rain, but we can do something that Key Club has taught us – persevere.” Mr. and Mrs. Roshan Khan were the evening’s gracious hosts, as they facilitated the event’s proceedings on the impeccable lawns of their Atlantic Gardens residence.

Among the highlights were musical performances by club members and an inspirational speech by guest speaker Mrs. Linda Arbogast- Country Director of Guyana Peace Corps. The main attraction of the evening, however, was the installation of the executive board and the twenty-five (25) charter members of the club. The current executive board, which will serve until June, consists of President Daniel Razick, Vice President Gye-Anne Bourque, Secretary Nakisha Naraine, Treasurer Gabriella Safeek, Lieutenant Governor Britney Seereeram, Bulletin Editor Anisa Nasir and Assistant Editor Greer Jackson. Ms. Sophia Chase, Key Club District Administrator of the KCI Caribbean Atlantic District and Ms. Hannah Rowe, District Governor, led the installation, imploring the newly installed board and members to stay true to the values, objectives and motto of Key Club, whilst serving their home, school and community. They were also assisted by the District Administrator of Bahamas – Mr. Melford Clarke.

After Dr. Mekdeci accepted the charter and made brief remarks, President Razick addressed the audience. He expressed gratitude to several individuals, particularly the club’s faculty advisors, Ms. Joanna Trim and Ms. Niocie Browne, who worked tirelessly to ensure that all the club’s activities thus far have been a success.  ‘It is truly remarkable to see how far we have come as a group and what we have achieved in such a short time,’ said Razick. ‘While collectively we have achieved much, I am confident that together, we can build on our accomplishments and continue to make a positive difference in our community.’ He concluded on a powerful note, sharing with the audience a poem called ‘Success’ by Ralph Waldo Emerson.

With the first Key Club in Guyana finally being chartered, it is the members’ hope that the name ‘Key Club’ will soon become more well-known across the country
