West Ruimveldt fire leaves five homeless

Five persons are now homeless following a fire which gutted their Hibiscus Street ,West Ruimveldt home Thursday midday.

Reports are that smoke was seen emanating from the single flat, five bedroom home of the Walcott family at Lot 638,West Ruimveldt around 11:40 this morning when an alarm was raised. An occupant of the home was reportedly sewing at the time. Other persons in the area reported that there was a power outage and soon after power was restored to the area, smoke was seen at a section of the house.

When members of the Guyana Fire Service arrived at the scene , they were frantically searching for water, a move which was criticized by those present.The fire quickly swept through the building and by the time another fire tender arrived , the firemen were only left to contain the blaze.The house was gutted in less than 15 minutes.

Neighbours offered comforting words to the occupants of the house as they stood helplessly and contemplated their next move.
