A gold miner from Victoria, East Coast Demerara was chopped to death in Mahdia where he had been residing for the past 15 years, officials said.

Investigators are treating the death of 57-year old Charles Major as a robbery murder.

Police said his body was found about 6 AM Friday along a trail at Dickman Hill, Mahdia with several lacerations.  He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mahdia Hospital.

Persons knowledgeable about the probe said Major was killed late Thursday night and most likely stripped of jewellery he was wearing.

He was residing on one of two of his gold claims. His wife died last year and he “He was a strong, nice decent man. He was not a bad person,” said the source.

The source expressed grave concern that police were doing nothing to crack down on the large number of criminals in Mahdia and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, police are also probing the death of 28-year old Shem Padmore of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara.  Investigators said “a suspected bullet injury was seen to his back.”

Police said he was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Medical Centre Thursday night “by two men who hurriedly left the medical facility in a motor vehicle.” Padmore was pronounced dead on arrival.
