Skeldon Estate Manager, Dave Kumar leaving the Springlands Magistrates Court.

The Manager of the Guyana Sugar Corporation’s (Guysuco) Skeldon Estate, Dave Kumar was Thursday arraigned on charges of riotous behaviour and assaulting a peace officer with intent to resist arrest.

Kumar, who was last year at the centre of the dismissal of an employee that led to a strike,  was released on his own recognizance. Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh ordered him to return to the Springland’s Magistrates’ Court on April 16, 2015.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Playter did not object to bail. Defence lawyers Ramesh Rajkumar and former Magistrates Krisendat Persaud and Chandra Sohan had earlier requested that reasonable bail be granted.

Kumar failed to show up in court on February 12, 2015 when the case was first called.

The prosecution’s case is that on Friday, December 12, 2014 Kumar challenged policemen at the Springlands Police Station to a fight, pushed several of them.

Prior to being ordered to drive to the station, he was stopped by a police patrol while driving a Guysuco vehicle allegedly in a drunken state. He allegedly immediately became abusive and used indecent language, although he was cautioned and urged to desist from continuing to do so.

He allegedly refused police orders to exit the vehicle and immediately challenged the police’s authority to do so.

The Guysuco official appears to be well-known for his alleged legal infractions including the use of indecent language and urination in public.

Back in September 2014, he allegedly slapped Steven Daniel who was subsequently dismissed from the Corporation. That dismissal had sparked off a strike.
