Fire erupted at the Georgetown Prison Monday night during a small prison riot, resulting in a total lockdown of the correctional institution by police and prison service personnel.

Fire Chief Marlon Gentle confirmed that a mattress was set on fire during the fracas.

A high-ranking police officer in ‘A’ Division told Demerara Waves that two rival gangs began the unrest after prison officers found a quantity of marijuana in the jail.

He said the ring leaders have been since isolated and the fire extinguished by prison officers.

However, police and fire service personnel were still at the facility until late Monday night. Another source said the security personnel would likely overnight there until they are convinced that calm has been restored.
