President Donald Ramotar

A proposed visit by President Donald Ramotar to the Region Nine community of Moco Moco on Tuesday was turned down by the village after no prior notice was given of the intended visit.

Reports out of the area are that on Monday the community was informed of plans by representatives of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in the Rupununi for a visit by the head of state.

Toshao of Moco Moco, Mark George told Demerara Waves today that he received a call from PPP activist Desmond Kissoon on Monday around midday.”He called me and told me that the Presidentwanted to visit  Moco Moco tomorrow (Tuesday) but I told him that it could not happen because we were not prepared”, he said.George noted that for such a visit, the community would have to make adequate preparations to accommodate the President. He noted too that the village council was at the time actively involved in meetings with representatives of the Protected Areas Commission, in which some heads of the village were out of the area at the time.

“Suppose we have to get dances and so in order…we would have to be prepared”, George noted. Persons in the area told Demerara Waves that denial may be because of fear, citing an incident late last year in which Aishalton teacher John Adams was assaulted by a Presidential guard during a visit by Ramotar to that community. However, George said that it was merely the hasty arrangements which he blamed squarely on the PPP activists in the region. He said a letter of apology is already being crafted to dispatch to the Office of the President (OP) regarding the truncated visit.

George reiterated that it was the short notice which resulted in the community not being able to accommodate the president.

Late last year, Adams, a mathematics teacher at Aisalton, alleged that he was assaulted by presidential guards at a meeting in after he made several remarks while the president was addressing the gathering. The incident drew condemnation from various quarters .
