GUYANA: Police probably strike gang of bandits

A gang of bandits believed to be responsible for a number of home invasions in East Berbice might have been dealt a severe blow with Saturday’s arrest of several persons in the traditional stronghold of Guyana’s governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

Police said in a statement that three men were arrested at Port Mourant and two improvised shotguns, a one toque mask and one cell phone that was stolen during one of the robberies were recovered.

Investigators  were grilling the detainees about two armed robberies that occurred at Tain and Ankerville, Port Mourant on December 23, 2014.

Ankerville is the home-village of the PPP’s late co-founder and former President of Guyana, Dr. Cheddi Jagan.

Crime is expected to feature highly in the upcoming general and regional elections.
